Withered Rose

Vivian

The melodious bell rang, and the students were thronging out of the school when a girl jumped from the roof of the teaching building. A pool of blood crept along her long hair, dying the waterfall dark red. There was a stretch of cloudless blue sky, but the heartrending cries made it cloud over.

I rushed to the spot after receiving the call and took evidence. Suddenly, a crying girl jumped into my attention, I showed her my detective card and asked her, “What is your relationship?”

The girl stared me for several seconds and replied, “She is my good friend.”

“Do you know what happened?” I asked without any smile.

“I…”, I could see her hesitation in her eyes, “I knew something strange, which is a website called The Rose SOS, where lots of net users wrote down the bad things that happened to them and issued the declaration of suicide. Doris, my good friend, went to the website very often these days.”

“So you mean she committed suicide after entering the Internet? What is the website?”.

“Www.rosesos.cn”. I wrote it down and then I went back to my office to open the website. A giant rose full of thorns and thistles jumped into my eyes, which then came with a branch of articles written by different people. Some of them lost jobs and could not support their family, others were abandoned by their husband while some students were bullied severely in school. Doris was one of the example.

“Only because I am stout and don’t like talking, you said I was a dead pig and made my chair loose. When I sat on it, it broke and I dropped on the ground. Then all of you laughed at me!!! Why did you do this?! What on earth am I living for? Damn you!!!!!!” This was written three days ago at 11:08 p.m. I thought I should talk with Doris ’ classmates.

Afterward, I went to Doris school and asked one of her classmates, “Did you get along with Doris usually?” “We didn’t talk very often and she is very introverted.” “That’s it? Tell me about what you know. Listen, it is a big case. It is a life, ok?” I stared at him somberly. “Well, we always jeered at her and Simon was the one who started it and three days ago, he threatened her because she cried in front of our head teacher after being bullied.” I said thanks to him and told him to keep contact with me. I wondered if Doris committed suicide or was she murdered by the bully called Simon? How could I  find evidence?

The next day, I arrived at Simon’s house and began to be serious, asking, "Where were you after school 2 days ago? Any witnesses?” He seemed panic and replied, ”I was in the washroom by myself.” “I heard that you had an intense relationship with Doris .Do you know anything about her death?” I stared fixedly at him. “I knew… But, but I didn’t kill her! I just made fun of her, I’ve never thought of taking her life away!” he said in an agitated tone. “Ok, but please go with me for the investigation.” On our way, I noticed his nervous facial expression and he kept sweating. Though no one could prove that he was in the washroom when Doris died, I got no evidence that he was the killer. I needed him to plead guilty.

However, when we got to the police station, the girl who cried on the spot was there. The policeman told me that she admitted that it was herself who killed Doris . “But why?” I felt so confused. “I didn’t know she would really jump from the building! She was always bullied by others and didn’t do anything against it at all. I had told her many times that she couldn’t be so feeble that everyone would made fun of her at will. Two days ago, we had a quarrel at the top of the teaching building because Simon changed her chair and she fell down. I got angry and said to her, ‘You coward! Why didn’t you yell at him? What are you living for? It would be better to end your own life rather than being bullied every day!’ I said this because I wanted her to change herself, but she nodded and said, ‘You are right… There’s no reason for me to be alive…’ I became indignant because she didn’t understand my meaning and yelled, ‘If you really think so, jump from the building!’ I didn't think she would, really, please trust me… But she smiled at me strangely then really jumped… Oh, I will never forgive myself…” I comforted her and signed, “Life is not like what we think they are supposed to be.”
