On Nov. 10th, More than 50 Chinese and foreign teachers and students of International High School watched an English musical, Olive Twist, in Tianjin’s Zhonghua Theatre£¬which was favorably reviewed by teachers and students.
Olive Twist is the famous work of Charles Dickens, who was an English critical realistic writer of the 19th century. For deep appreciation of this work, we made full preparation of the plot for the students. First, we helped the students read the novel in the foreign classes and watched the DVD with both Chinese and English subtitles, with which the students went to watch the performance with anticipation.
The musical started at 2:00 in the afternoon. It has the setting of typical Western Europe architecture, wailing music and dreamlike lights. All of these led the audience to a cold windy evening in the 1930s of British. All the actors are international students from different countries. Their great commitment, fluent and almost perfect English, exquisite acting and marvelous music drove the plot from one climax to another and their performance brought applauses. While the students enjoyed the beautiful English, they were influenced by the Western cultural art. Even after the performance most students were still immerged in great enjoyment.
As the Canadian principal Elizabeth said, it is precious and effective to have the students perceive language, experience art and apprehend London life. With the English environment, it is the best way to learn English by thinking and communicating in English.
